This drawing was inspired by my many visits to the Schuylkill River Park over this last summer. The scene depicts the various activities of people who frequent the park, such as a father playing with his son and their dog, a man playing guitar on the bench, and a man reading his book (the vantage point for the next work, Slice of Life). This work is a panoramic view both literally and figuratively of life, showing both the actual panorama of a park and the panoply of activities that people enjoy at public parks. A major source of inspiration for this work was Maurits Cornelis Escher’s Hand with Reflecting Sphere, which has a fish-eye effect that allows you to see the artist himself and the room around him. Escher’s work juxtaposes vertical and horizontal views in one piece, which creates a surreal quality to it, as in Panorama of Life.
