Art by Phoebe Cunningham, MS4
I saw a small opening betweenÂ
The pines, oaks, and sugar maples
And decided to leave the hiking trail,Â
Entering a humid and lush forest.Â
The air was heavy and suffocating,Â
But the breeze was a sweet embrace;
I walked deeper into the foliage,Â
Where the birds sang an ephemeral melody.Â
The crushing of leaves under my boots grew louder,Â
While the chatter from the trail was getting fainter.Â
I heard the rumbling of waterÂ
And walked towards it.Â
When I got there,Â
I stood by the riverbed and saw my reflectionÂ
In crystal water – the purest I’ve seen.Â
I realized that the sun was setting;
What a risk, I thought
Who would help me in the dark?Â
What is fear in the face of discovery, though?
Instead of turning back,Â
I jumped into the turbulent waves,Â
Succumbing to the water tumbling over me.
I was tossed over,Â
Submerged,Â
Pushed afloat,Â
Thrust belowÂ
And back up.Â
I was finally stable, floating swiftly under the moonlight.Â
I couldn’t see the end of the river,Â
But that’s not what I had jumped in for –Â
I wanted to learn how to swimÂ
And see what lies below the surface
