This is a five-panel comic inspired by David Beauchard’s graphic novel Epileptic (pp.11 and 53). I imitated Beauchard’s graphic style and told a new story. The fictional narrator recounts her grandmother’s death, her family’s concealment of the bad news from her grandfather, and her questions around grief, love, and family.
In this family, love licenses deception. Love creates distance. Love means to hide your pain and to bear the weight of truth for those you love.
